Daily Dose of the Dub: Cougars, Chiefs sign prospects, Winterhawks and Tigers make trade and Training Camp Updates

Cougars sign pair of prospects 

The Prince George Cougars have signed a pair of prospects, the first of which was Fischer O’Brien. The Prince George native was acquired by the Cougars in May from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in exchange for Tyson Phare. The 2003-born forward was originally drafted by the Hurricanes in the fifth round of the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft. Last season with the BCMML’s Cariboo Cougars, he had two goals and five assists in 40 games. He is also the younger brother of former Cougar Brogan O’Brien. 

The Cougars also signed 2002-born defenseman Ethan McColm. McColm came to the Cougars in a trade around the 2018 WHL Trade Deadline which saw Jonas Harkins and Jesse Gabrielle head to the Regina Pats. Originally selected by the Pats in the eighth round of the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft, he spent last season with the Eastman Selects in the MAAAMHL notching one goal and 12 assists in 45 games.

Chiefs sign Cunningham

The Spokane Chiefs have signed 2019 3rd round pick Logan Cunningham to a WHL Player Agreement. The Yellowknife, Northwest Territories native is the second player from the Chiefs 2019 WHL Draft Class to sign with Spokane.

Tigers acquire Fradette from Winterhawks

A day after the Fort McMurray Oil Barons acquired his CJHL rights, the Medicine Hat Tigers have acquired goaltender Evan Fradette from the Portland Winterhawks in exchange for a 2021 conditional eighth-round pick. Fradette looks to be competing with 2002-born Garin Bjorklund for the Tigers back-up job as well as serving as an insurance policy when Mads Sogaard attends Ottawa Senators training camp and takes part in international tournaments for Denmark.

ICE battling health issues in net 

We’ve gained more insight into why goalie Daniel Hauser was recalled by the Winnipeg ICE from his midget team thanks to the Winnipeg Free Press’ Mike Sawatzky. Sawatzky reports Jesse Makaj is dealing with an illness while Duncan McGovern and Gage Alexander are dealing with upper-body injuries.

Chiefs’ Russell injured in a preseason game 

Spokane Chiefs defenseman Bobby Russell left Friday’s game early in the first period with what looked to be a leg injury after a knee-on-knee hit with Portland Winterhawks Tyson Kozak. Kozak was assessed a two-minute minor for the hit while there was no update on Russell’s condition.

Rebels cut roster to 28 players

Prior to last night’s action, the Red Deer Rebels made another round of cuts to bring their roster down to 28 players. This round of cuts includes the 2004-borns signed to the roster: Carter AndersonHunter Mayo, and Jace Weir as well as 2003-borns Josh Medernach and Trey Patterson.

Warriors release Mistelbacher, Torzsok

The Moose Jaw Warriors have released Jesse Mistelbacher and Hunor Torzsok from their active roster. Mistelbacher split last season between the Warriors and Virdin Oil Capitals of the MJHL registering one goal and two assists in 27 total games. Torzsok primarily played with the BCHL’s Nanaimo Clippers where he tallied three goals and two assists in 26 games but did also see WHL action with the Vancouver Giants. In eight games with the Giants, he had one assist. Torszok’s CJHL rights are now owned by the MJHL’s Selkirk Steelers after a trade with Nanaimo.

Ferraro signs PTO with Canucks

Landon Ferraro (220 GP, 76 G, 76 A with the Red Deer Rebels and Everett Silvertips) has signed a pro-tryout with the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks. He battled injuries for most of last season and was limited to just 12 games with the AHL’s Iowa Wild recording two goals and three assists in 12 games.
