WHL teams select 25 players from 8 nations in the CHL Import Draft

The 2020 CHL Import Draft was held on Tuesday, June 30th as the two-round draft took place online. Swift Current held the WHL’s earliest pick at third overall and selected 2002-born Slovakian defenceman Oliver Fatul. In all, 25 players were selected by 20 teams, both Everett and Portland chose to pass on their first-round selection. Just five teams (Swift Current, Tri-City, Vancouver, Calgary, and Winnipeg) made picks in the second round.

The Czech Republic leads the way with seven selections.

Land purchased for a potential site of Raiders new hockey rink

City council for the City of Prince Albert approved a land purchase in the southeast part of Prince Albert that appears to be part of a phased-in sports location. Phase 2 would see the development of a new facility for the community-owned franchise. The land purchase is the area just to the east of Highway 3 and south of Marquis Rd. The City council’s vote was a 5-4 decision to spend $6.5 million on the 18-acre parcel of land. The project’s entire cost is estimated at $60 million dollars and is believed to create hundreds of permanent jobs.

Broncos and Royals make a minor trade

Originally a selection of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Wyatt Wilson has been dealt to the Victoria Royals from the Swift Current Broncos. He spent last season with the Moose Jaw Warriors U18 AAA program where he scored six goals and added 27 assists in 44 games. His younger brother Anthony Wilson is also part of the Royals organization.

Patera signs 3-year deal with the Vegas Golden Knights

Following his final junior age-eligible season, Jiri Patera has signed a 3-year contract worth $2,400,000 with the Golden Knights. Patera was 46-32-5-4 in his 89 appearances over two seasons. He had a 2.95 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage. He was the Eastern Conference nominee for the WHL Goaltender of the Year in 2019-2020.

Oil Kings Alumni Dysin Mayo signs two-way contract with Arizona Coyotes

Mayo (248 GP, 28G, 106A with the Edmonton Oil Kings) has signed a one-year two-way contract with the Arizona Coyotes. Mayo is coming off his fourth season with the Tucson Roadrunners, the AHL affiliate of the Coyotes. The 6-foot-2 198-pound defenseman has 12 goals and 26 assists in 221 AHL games.

WHL alumni signs for another season overseas

Cody Carlson (305GP, 25G, 100A with Medicine Hat, Regina, Prince George) has signed for a third season with ASC Corona Brasov. Last season Carlson split between UTE Budapest and Corona Brasov. In 42 games in the Erste Liga, he scored nine goals and added 19 assists.
