Daily Dose of the Dub: Chiefs adding Thompson, Pats game cancelled due to damage to ice and more

Thompson joins Chiefs 

According to player agent Darryl Wolski, the Spokane Chiefs have added 20-year-old Baron Thompson to their roster. His entire WHL career to this point had been spent with the Brandon Wheat Kings where he had 24 goals and 26 assists in 172 games. After being released by the Wheat Kings, Thompson attended training camp with the Seattle Thunderbirds but did not make the team. He had been playing this year with the MJHL’s Dauphin Kings where he has notched 13 goals and 15 assists in 15 games.  The Chiefs have an open overage spot with Jake McGrew on the injured list. It is believed that the addition of Thompson is as a 2-week tryout.

Pats game postponed

The Regina Pats-Swift Current Broncos game set to be played on Friday night in Regina was postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date due to damage caused to the ice rendering it unplayable during pre-game set-up.

Mikhalchuk return delayed due to paperwork issues 

Vladislav Mikhalchuk‘s return to the Prince George Cougars has been delayed as the KHL has not yet finalized his release from Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod. It’s not known yet if he’ll be in the lineup when the Cougars host the Victoria Royals on Saturday.

Gavlas suspended indefinitely 

As per the WHL’s Discipline page, Medicine Hat Tigers defenseman Parker Gavlas has been suspended for an undetermined length for this hit on Prince George Cougars forward Ilijah Colina.

Calvert recalled from Midget AAA

The Moose Jaw Warriors recalled forward Atley Calvert from the Moose Jaw AAA Warriors of the SMAAAHL. In 13 games this season in midget, he’s recorded eight goals and eight assists.

Fonstad, Patterson return to Silvertips

Cole Fonstad and Max Patterson returned to the Everett Silvertips lineup on Friday night in their 4-3 win over the Spokane Chiefs. Fonstad last played on October 19th against Prince Albert while Patterson had been out since November 2nd.

Samson back in Cougars lineup 

Prince George Cougars defenseman Ethan Samson was back in the lineup on Friday night. He had been out since November 2nd’s game against the Spokane Chiefs.

Milestones 

  • Medicine Hat Tigers forward Teague Patton made his WHL debut.
  • Moose Jaw Warriors defenseman Cory King tallied his first WHL goal which also happened to be the game-winner over the Winnipeg ICE. Atley Calvert made his WHL debut.
  • Prince Albert Raiders forward Cole Nagy recorded his first WHL assist.
  • Saskatoon Blades forward Radek Kucerik scored his first WHL goal.
  • Seattle Thunderbirds forward Matthew Rempe made his WHL debut. Standing at six-foot-eight, he is now the tallest player to suit up for the Thunderbirds in franchise history. Meanwhile, Michael Horon also scored his first WHL goal.
  • Tri-City Americans forward Kyle Olson played in his 200th WHL game on Friday. He has spent his entire career with Tri-City and has potted 52 goals with 113 assists.
  • Vancouver Giants forward Jackson Shepard played in his 200th WHL game. He has 22 goals and 43 assists in a career that has also seen him play for the Kamloops Blazers and Lethbridge Hurricanes. Giants defenseman Tanner Brown also notched his first WHL goal.

World U-17 Challenge Final set 

Canada White will be playing for bronze after falling 7-3 to USA in Friday’s semi-final matchup. Portland Winterhawks prospect Chaz Lucius had a goal in the win while Prince George Cougars netminder Tyler Brennan made 10 saves on 14 shots before being pulled.

Lucius and the Americans will be playing Russia after they shutout the Czech Republic 4-0 in the other semifinal matchup.  Danila Iurov led the way for the Russians with a goal and two assists.

Sawchenko records first pro shutout 

Zachary Sawchenko (177 GP with the Moose Jaw Warriors from 2013-17) recorded his first professional shutout with the ECHL’s Allen Americans on Friday night. In two games this season, he’s posted a 1.50 GAA and .958 save percentage.

First Star: Kamloops Blazers forward Brodi Stuart had one goal and three assists

Second Star: Everett Silvertips forward Gage Goncalves had two goals

Third Star: Kamloops Blazers forward Connor Zary had two goals.

Honourable Mention

Saskatoon Blades netminder Nolan Maier made 28 saves on 29 shots. Medicine Hat Tigers forward Jonathan Brinkman and Tyler Preziuso each had a goal and two assists.
