2019-20 CHL season paused until further notice

The 2019-20 Canadian Hockey League season has officially been paused until further notice due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. There is not a lot of information available as this is a quickly developing story, but fans are being encouraged to hold on to their tickets for remaining games until more information becomes available. Fans concerned about being charged for WHL Live service that they are not using can contact Endeavour Streaming through the WHL Live website to cancel their subscription.

Status of Memorial Cup up in the air

With the Canadian Hockey League on pause, the status of this year’s Memorial Cup is now up in the air. There is still plenty of time for a decision to be made but reports suggest there are already contingency plans being discussed if the Memorial Cup cannot go ahead as currently scheduled.

Hockey Canada cancels all sanctioned events

Hockey Canada has announced the cancelation of all Hockey Canada-sanctioned activities as of March 13, 2020. This includes events from youth hockey, to junior hockey to international events such as the Under-18 World Championships which were canceled by the IIHF.

Okal signs extension in the Czech Republic

Zdenek Okal (110 GP, 27 G, 41 A with the Medicine Hat Tigers from 2008-10) has signed a three-year contract extension with Zlin in the Czech Republic. This year he had 11 goals and 15 assists in 42 games.

The University of Alberta Golden Bears hand out team awards

The University of Alberta Golden Bears handed out their team awards on Thursday:

  • Grayson Pawlenchuk (282 GP, 60 G, 84 A with the Red Deer Rebels from 2012-18) was named Team MVP.
  • Lucas Nickles (265 GP, 52 G, 60 A with the Tri-City Americans from 2010-15) was award The Captains’ Trophy for Outstanding Contribution with the Least Recognition.
  • Ryan Rehill (249 GP, 21 G, 61 A with the Kamloops Blazers from 2012-16) was presented with the President’s Trophy for Sportsmanship, Leadership, and Integrity.
  • Noah Philp (259 GP, 54 G, 112 A with the Kootenay ICE and Seattle Thunderbirds from 2015-2019 was given the W.D. Smith Trophy as Most Improved Player and the Golden Bears Hockey Alumni Three Stars Award.
  • Dawson Davidson (301 GP, 37 G, 154 A with the Kamloops Blazers, Regina Pats and Saskatoon Blades from 2014-19) won the Bill Moores Trophy as Most Outstanding Freshman.
  • Ben Carroll (178 GP, 16 G, 60 A with the Edmonton Oil Kings from 2012-16) received  the Vic Dzurko Memorial Trophy as Outstanding Defensive Player
  • Sawyer Lange (252 GP, 26 G, 91 A with the Prince Albert Raiders from 2011-15) was the winner of the Gord Thibodeau Trophy for Perseverance and Courage.

Hitmen mourning the loss of Vice-Chair Ken King

The Calgary Hitmen are mourning the loss of Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation Vice-Chair Ken King who passed away at the age of 68. King joined the organization in 2001 as President and CEO and played key roles with the Hitmen, as well as the NHL’s Calgary Flames, AHL’s Stockton Heat, NLL’s Calgary Roughnecks and CFL’s Calgary Stampeders.
