Broncos claim Kustra off waivers from Victoria

The Swift Current Broncos have claimed overage defenseman Jake Kustra off waivers from the Victoria Royals. Kustra has played 189 games in the WHL with the Royals and Saskatoon Blades, scoring six goals and adding 26 assists with 260 penalty minutes. The move brings the Royals down to six overage players including Scott Walford and import player Igor Martynov while the Broncos are now at the WHL limit of three overage players with Kustra and forwards Ian Briscoe and Ethan O’Rourke.

The Edmonton Oil Kings have placed forward Zach Russell on waivers to help clear up the team’s overage situation.
Russell has spent his junior career in between the AJHL and WHL and has played with the Oil Kings and Brandon Wheat Kings. In 70 games, he has scored four goals with eight assists and 99 penalty minutes. The Oil Kings now have five overage players signed to their roster for next season, including captain Trey Fix-Wolansky who is likely to move into the pros with the Columbus Blue Jackets Organization.

Hockey Canada has released its roster of 43 players selected to attend their summer development camp in Plymouth, Michigan in late July. The roster includes seven forwards and five defensemen from the WHL. Among those players, four have already been selected in the NHL Draft, seven are eligible to be selected at this weekend’s draft and one player is eligible for the 2020 NHL Draft in Montreal. A total of 10 teams will have at least one player at the camp and the Brandon Wheat Kings, Calgary Hitmen and Lethbridge Hurricanes will each have two players at the camp. The full WHL contingent includes:

The Prince Albert Raiders have promoted Curt Brownlee to the role of Director of Player Personnel. Brownlee joined the Raiders as a scout in the 2011-12 season, working under previous Director of Player Personnel Ron Gunville. Gunville sadly passed away from cancer last December. Gunville had been with the organization since the 2009-10 as a scout before moving into the Director of Player Personnel role in 2016-17.

Jack Adams Award winner Barry Trotz, who joined the @NYIslanders after leading Washington to the Stanley Cup the previous season, helped his new team post a 23-point improvement over 2017-18.

New York Islanders Head Coach Barry Trotz (153 GP, 14 G, 49 A with the Regina Pats) won the Jack Adams Award at the 2019 NHL Awards. Trotz joined the Islanders after winning the Stanley Cup with the Washington Capitals in 2018, coaching his new team to a 23-point improvement over last season despite losing the franchise’s best player, John Tavares to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
