Broncos acquire Svenson from ICE

The Swift Current Broncos have acquired forward Justin Svenson from the Winnipeg ICE for a conditional ninth-round pick in the 2021 WHL Bantam Draft. Originally a third-round pick of the Red Deer Rebels in 2017, Svenson has suited up for 19 WHL games, all with Red Deer, and has yet to register a point. The ICE acquired Svenson from Red Deer as part of the monster trade that sent Cam Hausinger and Brett Davis to Red Deer. He’s currently playing in the MJHL for the Winkler Flyers where he has four goals and 14 assists in 15 games.

ICE assign Gurski to Blues 

The Winnipeg ICE also assigned goaltender Will Gurski to the Winnipeg Blues of the MJHL. He has played two games with the ICE this season posting a 4.50 GAA and .839 Save Percentage.

Blues ship Giannuzzi to Steinbach

In a corresponding move, the Blues sent goaltender Dante Giannuzzi to the Steinbach Pistons for future considerations. The Portland Winterhawks prospect has played four WHL games and has posted a 4.09 GAA and .833 Save Percentage.

Thurston suspend by WHL

Kamloops Blazers defenseman Trevor Thurston has been handed a suspension for a kneeing major against Victoria Royals defenseman Noah Lamb on Saturday. For a full recap of the game from our Ryan Sinclair, you can go here. 

Gricius named WHL Player of the Week

Portland Winterhawks forward Jake Gricius has been named WHL Player of the Week. In two games this week, he recorded three goals and four assists in wins over the Prince Albert Raiders and Spokane Chiefs.

Farkas takes home Goalie of the Week

He only played one game this week but his performance was so phenomenal that Victoria Royals netminder Shane Farkas earned WHL Goaltender of the Week. In the lone game against the Kamloops Blazers, Farkas made 34 saves on 35 shots for a .971 Save Percentage and 1.00 GAA.

  • In the lone game on Monday night, Sam Popowich made his debut for the Seattle Thunderbirds and registered an assist in a 2-1 win over the Calgary Hitmen

Lowry suspended for two games 

Adam Lowry (235 GP, 90 G, 114 A with the Swift Current Broncos) has been handed a two-game suspension for an illegal check to the head in the NHL’s Heritage Classic. He’s played 12 games with the Jets this season and has no points with four penalty minutes.

McCue signs in Fayetteville 

Beau McCue (270 GP, 85 G, 85 A with the Tri-City Americans) has signed with the Fayetteville Marksmen of the SPHL. He played one game in the ECHL this year with the Jacksonville IceMen with no points.

First Star: Seattle Thunderbirds goaltender Roddy Ross made 33 saves on 34 shots.

Second Star: Seattle Thunderbirds forward Matthew Wedman had a goal on four shots

Third Star: Seattle Thunderbirds forward Keltie Jeri-Leon had a goal on three shots.

Calgary Hitmen defenseman Layne Toder had a goal on two shots. Goaltender Brayden Peters made 26 saves on 28 shots.
