Appelt released, Zabransky turns professional

Following three full seasons with the Blazers, 20-year-old Ryley Appelt was released from the Blazers roster. He scored 15 times and added 13 assists over 151 games with Kamloops. Appelt is now a free agent after passing through WHL waivers.

Zabransky has a deal signed with HC Kometa Brno, as the Blazers confirmed he will not be with the team in 2020-21. Over three seasons and four teams Zabransky scored eight times and added 41 assists.

The Blazers now have four players for the three overage spots on their roster for 2020-21.

Mount Royal University reveals new recruits

Four former WHL players were included in this wave of recruits for Mount Royal University in Calgary, AB. Dominic Schmiemann (249GP, 7G, 45A with Swift Current, Calgary, Tri-City, and Brandon), Lane Gilliss (261GP, 40G, 57A with Portland), Kyle Olson (219GP, 61G, 126A with Tri-City and Calgary) and Riley Sawchuk (259GP, 62G, 98A with Tri-City and Edmonton) have all committed to the Cougars for 2020-21 following their WHL careers.

Blades release Huber

In an effort to get down to the roster limit of three overage players, the Blades announced they have released Zach Huber. He played 180 games between the Hitmen and Blades, scoring 25 times and assisting on 14 others.

Cougars sign CHL Import Draft pick

The 12th overall selection in the CHL Import Draft went to the Cougar and they took Finnish native Jonni Karkkainen. He has now signed a WHL Standard Player Agreement to play for the Cougars in 2020-21. Last season with the HIFK U18 team, Karkkainen scored nine times and assisted on nine other goals in 29 games. He also represented Finland internationally the last two seasons.

Henry announces retirement

Following 13 professional seasons spent split between the AHL, ECHL, KHL, Liiga, and Allsvenskan leagues, Jordan Henry has announced his retirement from hockey. The 34-year-old just finished his fifth season with the Brampton Beast of the ECHL, a season in which he was named team captain. He scored seven goals and added four assists in 49 games. Henry spent his WHL career with the Moose Jaw Warriors and Red Deer Rebels, collecting 12 goals and 61 assists in 270 games.

Harper commits to another season with SPHL’s Birmingham Bulls

Harrison Harper (52GP, 1G, 1A with Lethbridge) has committed to a second season with the Bulls of the SPHL. Last season in nine games Harper had four assists in nine games. This first step in professional hockey came following five seasons with Nipissing University.

Winquist (301GP, 101G, 115A with Everett) has signed overseas with HC 05 Banska Bystrica of the top Slovakian hockey league. He has spent the last six seasons between the AHL and ECHL, playing last season with the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL (48GP, 14G, 36A).
