Rebels name Sutter associate general manager

The Red Deer Rebels announced the promotion of Shaun Sutter (58 goals, 61 assists in 226 games with Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, and Calgary from 1997-2001) to associate general manager on Wednesday.

Sutter, 41, has been the Rebels’ director of player personnel and assistant GM since the 2013-14 season. He started out with Red Deer as a scout in 2011.

Kraken lock up True for 2021-22 season

Forward Alexander True (45 goals, 39 assists in 169 games with Seattle from 2014-17) has signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Seattle Kraken.

The 24-year-old from København, DEN was selected by the Kraken from San Jose in the NHL Expansion Draft. True had one assist in seven games with the Sharks in 2020-21.

He added nine goals and 20 points in 27 American Hockey League games with the San Jose Barracuda.

Wick hangs up his skates after 15-year career

Thirty-five year old Roman Wick (53 goals, 65 assists in 127 games with Red Deer and Lethbridge from 2004-06) has retired after a 15-year professional hockey career.

Wick spent the last nine seasons with the ZSC Lions of Switzerland’s National League. The native of Bronschhofen, SUI had seven points in 47 games with the Lions in 2020-21.

Sharks sign Hill to a deal for 2021-22

Goaltender Adin Hill (67-38-7, 2.86 GAA, .919 SV%, 5 SO in 115 games with Portland from 2013-16) signed a two-year contract reportedly worth $4.35 million with the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday.

Hill, a 25-year-old from Comox, BC, was 9-9-1 with a 2.74 goals-against-average, a .913 save percentage, and two shutouts in 19 games with the Coyotes in 2020-21. He was traded to San Jose on July 17.

Stanton goes from Bakersfield to Rockford

Defenseman Ryan Stanton (19 goals, 83 assists in 242 games with Moose Jaw from 2006-10) has signed a one-year AHL contract with the Rockford IceHogs.

Stanton, who hails from St. Albert, AB, was an alternate captain in Bakersfield this past season and posted 13 points in 35 games. The 32-year-old has played pro for 11 seasons split between the NHL and AHL.

McKenzie leaves Manitoba for Västerviks IK

Sherwood Park, AB product Skyler McKenzie (101 goals, 111 assists in 282 games with Portland from 2014-18) has signed with Västerviks IK of HockeyAllsvenskan for 2021-22.

The 23-year-old had five goals and eight points in 26 games with Manitoba of the AHL in 2020-21. He started the season with four points in six games while on loan to EHC Freiburg of the DEL2.

Soy tries his luck in Ireland with the Giants

Forward Tyler Soy (151 goals, 176 assists in 323 games with Victoria from 2013-18) has signed with the Belfast Giants of the UK’s Elite Ice Hockey League for 2021-22.

Soy, a 24-year-old from Surrey, BC, spent the last two-and-a-half seasons with the University of Alberta, putting up 18 goals and 26 points in 32 U SPORTS games.

Mannek returns to Utah this coming season

2000-born forward Mason Mannek has signed a one-year contract extension with the Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL for the 2021-22 season.

Mannek joined the Grizzlies after his WHL season with the Portland Winterhawks ended in May. The Herriman, UT product finishes his WHL career with 43 goals and 94 points in 212 games in Portland.

Brough returns as Cariboo Cougars U18 head coach

The Cariboo Cougars unveiled the staff for their U18 AAA team for the 2021-22 season on Wednesday and there is a WHL flavour. Returning to the Cougars as head coach for a fifth season is Tyler Brough (25 goals, 32 assists in 178 games with Prince George from 1996-99).
