Knak leaves Portland for HC Davos

2002-born forward Simon Knak has signed with HC Davos in Switzerland’s National League for the 2021-22 season. He was selected in the sixth-round, 179th overall by the Nashville Predators in last month’s NHL Draft.

Knak, who is from Zürich, SUI, had 25 goals and 63 points in 73 games with the Portland Winterhawks over the past two seasons. He was the captain for the Swiss U20 team this past season and posted four points in eight international games.

Americans to unveil coaching staff this Saturday

The Tri-City Americans announced on Tuesday that they plan to announce their coaching staff for the 2021-22 Western Hockey League season this Saturday. The Ams fired head coach Kelly Buchberger (26 goals, 39 assists in 123 games with Moose Jaw from 1984-86) last month.

Don Nachbaur (67 goals, 79 assists in 137 games with Billings from 1977-79) is still listed on Tri-City’s website as an associate coach. However, Buchberger is also still listed on the Americans’ website as the head coach.

Helenius retires from Dresdner Eislöwen

Goaltender Riku Helenius (22-12-6, 2.42 goals-against-average, .915 save percentage, three shutouts in 41 games with Seattle in 2007-08) was announced as a goaltending development coach for Jokerit’s U20, U18, and U16 teams, which play in SM-sarja for each corresponding age.

Helenius, 33, retires after spending 2020-21 with Dresdner Eislöwen of the DEL2. In 34 games, he posted a 16-17-0 record along with a 3.00 goals-against-average, a .902 save percentage, and two shutouts.

Murray signs a pact with the Avalanche

Defenseman Ryan Murray (22 goals, 99 assists in 191 games with Everett from 2009-13) has signed a one-year deal with the Colorado Avalanche worth a reported $2 million.

The 27-year-old from Regina, SK finished the 2020-21 season with 14 assists in 48 games with the New Jersey Devils.

MacDonald takes his game to Poland

Defenseman Cole MacDonald (23 goals, 75 assists in 266 games with Everett from 2012-16) will play his first season in Europe in 2021-22 after signing with Unia Oswiecim of Polska Hokej Liga.

MacDonald, who’s from Wetaskiwin, AB, notched seven assists in 43 games as a rookie with the ECHL’s Florida Everblades in 2020-21.

Mayo signs a deal with the Arizona Coyotes

Defenseman Dysin Mayo (28 goals, 106 assists in 248 games with Edmonton from 2012-16) signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Arizona Coyotes on Monday.

Mayo, 24, has spent the last four and a half seasons with the Tucson Roadrunners of the American Hockey League. The Victoria, BC native has 41 points in 251 career AHL games with the Roadrunners.

Moravec traded from the AJHL to the BCHL

The Penticton Vees of the BC Hockey League have acquired 2018 Prince Albert Raiders Bantam Draft pick Brett Moravec from the Calgary Canucks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League for future considerations.

Moravec, a 2003-born forward from Airdrie, AB, is committed to the University of Wisconsin for Sept. 2022. He had four goals and 12 points in 15 games with the Canucks in the abbreviated 2020-21 season.

Magee signs a try-out with Kometa Brno

Forward Brandon Magee (113 goals, 151 assists in 318 games with Chilliwack and Victoria from 2010-15) has signed a try-out with HC Kometa Brno of the Czech Republic’s Tipsport Extraliga.

The 27-year-old Edmontonian played six games for the Rapid City Rush of the ECHL in 2020-21 and posted one assist.

Ice draft pick Shaugabay commits to UMD

2005-born forward Jason Shaugabay announced his commitment to the University of Minnesota-Duluth on Tuesday. The product of Warroad, MN was selected by the Winnipeg ICE in the first round, sixth overall in the 2020 WHL US Prospect Draft.

He notched 24 goals and 53 points in 20 Minnesota Prep School games with Warroad High in 2020-21. Shaugabay also added 14 points in 17 games with Team Sanford Power in the  Upper Midwest High School Elite Hockey League.
