Daily Dose of the Dub: Alistrov leading way for WHLers at World Junior Division 1 torunament; Pachal suspended; McGrew has a hat trick

World  Junior Division 1 update:

Wednesday, 12/12/18:

Norway (1-2) 5 France (1-2) 0

Kristian Roykas-Marthinsen of the Saskatoon Blades scored his first of the tournament.

Belarus (3-0) 5 Austria (0-2-1) 0

Edmonton’s Vladimir Alistrov had two goals and an assist for three points leading the way. Prince Albert’s Aliaksei Protas had an assist and Victoria’s Igor Martynov had a goal.

Germany (3-0) 4 Latvia (1-3) 1

Vancouver’s Yannik Valenti had his first goal of the tournament in the German win.

Thursday, 12/13/18:

Germany (4-0) 5 Belarus (3-1) 1

The host country set themselves for a win overall in the tournament with a 5-1 takedown of the only previously unbeaten team. Giants forward Valenti had another goal in the win and Calgary’s Vladislav Yeryomenko had an assist in the loss for Belarus.

Friday, 12/14/18:

Norway 4 (2-2) Latvia (1-3) 2

Marthinsen scored his second of he tournament.

On Saturday, Norway plays Austria, Germany takes on France and Belarus challenges Latvia.

Alistrov is tied for third in tournament scoring with five points in four games. If Germany wins Saturday (the final day of the tournament) they advance. Belarus needs a regulation win for them and a regulation loss for Germany to advance.

One of those two will be promoted to play in the 2020 World Junior Championships.

Hockey Canada U20 Selection Camp update:

So at the very least the WHL will have Prince Albert’s Ian Scott, Moose Jaw’s Josh Brook and Spokane’s Ty Smith representing them at the U20 World Juniors.

Of the remaining 14 forwards, the WHL has Portland’s Cody Glass, Prince Albert’s Brett Leason and Spokane’s Jaret Anderson-Dolan. They have one more cut to make.

Pachal suspended

Three stars of the night:

  1. Jake McGrew (Spokane) – Hat-trick for the signed San Jose Sharks prospect. His three goals and an assist led the Chiefs to a 5-3 in in Seattle.
  2. Josh Williams (Medicine Hat) – Two goals and two assists as Williams was in on all four goals for the Tigers in a 4-1 win over Red Deer.
  3. Sean Montgomery (Prince Albert) – He had two goals and an assist in the 6-4 Raiders win over Swift Current.

Honorable mentions:

Dean McNabb turned away 26-of-27 in Regina’s 2-1 win over Moose Jaw… Josh Paterson had a goal and an assist in Saskatoon’s 3-2 victory over Brandon… Tarun Fizer had a goal and an assist as Victoria blew by Prince George 5-1… Egor Zamula had a goal and two assists for three points and the Calgary Hitmen were too much for the visiting Kelowna Rockets 5-1.. Peyton Krebs and Jaeger White each had a goal and an assist as Kootenay snapped their 12-game losing streak with a 5-3 win over Kamloops… Bryce Kindopp had two more goals and the Everett Silvertips took down the Vancouver Giants 4-1… Mads Sogaard of Medicine Hat stopped 49-of-50 and got the win.

Troubling moments:

-The game-winner for Regina was pretty clearly offside and yet was allowed. It was the first career goal for 2001-born defenseman Steven ZonneveldLuke Ormsby

was ejected from the game for allegedly spitting on a Pats player.
