Stankoven named to U18 Leadership group

The Western Hockey League will have a representative among Team Canada’s leadership group as Logan Stankoven was named an assistant captain for the U18 World Ice Hockey Championships. The 2003-born forward had seven goals and three assists through six games with the Kamloops Blazers before departing for the tournament. Last season, Stankoven played with Team Canada Red at the U17 World Hockey Challenge, scoring four goals in five games.

Lauer reaches 100th WHL coaching victory

In his third season behind the bench, Edmonton Oil Kings Head Coach Brad Lauer has earned his 100th WHL victory following the team’s 4-1 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers. Lauer had previously been an assistant coach with the Kootenay ICE (’02-’07) and has also held three assistant coaching gigs in the NHL.

Oremba scores first WHL goal

Seattle Thunderbirds 2005-born Sam Oremba scored his first WHL goal in a 6-3 loss to the Portland Winterhawks. Oremba scored at 14:12 of the first period to make it 3-2 Winterhawks. Oremba is a first-round pick of the Thunderbirds at the most recent WHL Draft. He was playing in his seventh WHL game.

Tschigerl scores first WHL hat trick

Forward Sean Tschigerl scored his first WHL hat trick in the Calgary Hitmen’s 7-2 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Tschigerl opened the scoring at 10:25 of the first period and followed it up with a goal at 17:59 of the second period to give his team a 5-2 lead. Short-handed at 9:27, Tschigerl scored his third and final goal, giving his team the winning score of 7-2. Tschigerl now has nine goals and six assists on the season.

Heshka departs Karpat

Defenseman Shaun Heshka (204GP, 25G, 82A with Everett ’03-’06) has departed Karpat of Liiga in Finland. Heshka just finished his fifth season with the team, a season in which he scored two goals and added 16 assists through 41 games. Despite not being drafted into the NHL, Heshka was able to get into eight games with the Phoenix Coyotes in 2009-10. Heshka was also not drafted into the WHL.
