10 WHL players named to U18 roster

Team Canada announced its roster for the 2021 IIHF U18 World Championships being held in Frisco, Texas.

The team includes goaltenders Thomas Milic (Seattle Thunderbirds) and Tyler Brennan (Prince George Cougars); defencemen Nolan Allan (Prince Albert Raiders), Olen Zellweger (Everett Silvertips), and Carson Lambos (Winnipeg ICE); and forwards Logan Stankoven (Kamloops Blazers), Conner Roulette (Seattle Thunderbirds), Cole Sillinger (Medicine Hat Tigers), Connor Bedard (Regina Pats), and Dylan Guenther (Edmonton Oil Kings).

Bedard is just the second double underage player to participate in the tournament for Team Canada. It is expected that most players will be away from their WHL teams on April 9, 2021, and not return in time for the rest of the shortened season.

Joining the 10 WHL players on the Canadian roster are Matt Weninger (Goaltending Consultant / Moose Jaw Warriors) and Dr. Ben Cameron (Team Physician / Lethbridge Hurricanes).

Oil Kings add two to roster

Dawson Seitz and Shea Van Olm have both been added to the Edmonton Oil Kings roster for the duration of the WHL season. 2005-born forward Dawson Seitz had played three games with the Northern Alberta U18 Prep team this season, collecting one assist. Seitz is a first-round WHL Draft pick of the Oil Kings from the 2020 draft. Van Olm also played for the Northern Alberta U18 Prep team this season, scoring three goals and adding three assists in six games. Van Olm was a sixth-round 2019 WHL Draft pick of the Oil Kings.

Pickering scores first WHL goal

Swift Current Broncos 2004-born defenseman Owen Pickering scored his first WHL goal at 19:40 of the second period, tying the game at five before the Broncos went on to win 8-5 over the Moose Jaw Warriors. Pickering was a ninth-round draft pick of the Broncos at the 2019 WHL Draft. He was playing in his 10th WHL game.

Wotton scores first WHL goal

Regina Pats 2003-born forward Colby Wotton scored his first WHL goal at 6:21 of the second period of last night’s 7-2 loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings. Wotton’s goal was the first for the Pats to make it 4-1. The Pats selected Wotton in the seventh-round of the 2018 WHL Draft. He was playing in his fourth WHL game.

Zimmer scores first WHL goal

Brandon Wheat Kings 2004-born forward Tyson Zimmer scored his first WHL goal at 8:03 of the second period to give the Wheat Kings a 5-1 lead in an eventual 7-2 win over the Regina Pats. The Wheat Kings drafted Zimmer in the first round of the 2019 WHL Draft. He was playing in his eighth WHL game.

Lindgren scores first WHL goal

2004-born defenseman Mats Lindgren scored his first WHL goal last night at 7:38 of the first period to give the Kamloops Blazers a 1-0 lead in an eventual 6-1 win over the Prince George Cougars. Lindgren was the Blazers’ first-round pick in the 2019 WHL Draft. It was Lindgren’s seventh WHL game.

Spencer scores first WHL goal

2004-born forward Tye Spencer scored his first WHL goal in last night’s 6-1 win over the Prince George Cougars. The goal came at 18:06 of the second period and gave the Blazers a 4-1 lead. Spencer was the Blazers’ third-round pick from the 2019 WHL Draft.

Dylan Guenther named WHL Player of the Month

Edmonton Oil Kings’ Dylan Guenther was named ‘WHL Player of the Month’ for February/March. Through nine contests, Guenther scored nine times and added nine assists. He is second in WHL scoring. He has six multi-point games including back-to-back four-point games to start the WHL season.

Dustin Wolf named WHL Goaltender of the Month

The Everett Silvertips’ Dustin Wolf was named ‘WHL Goaltender of the Month’ for February/March. Wolf has played five games this season and has a 4-1-0-0 record, a 0.59 goals-against average, and a .947 save percentage. Wolf also opened the season with three straight shutouts and set a new franchise record for the longest amount of time without allowing a goal.

Bedard named WHL Rookie of the Month

The Regina Pats’ Connor Bedard was named the ‘WHL Rookie of the Month’ for February/March. Through 10 games, Bedard had scored eight goals and added 11 assists. He has yet to miss the score sheet through the WHL Subway Hub Season in Regina.

Eight more Thunderbirds games to be broadcast on JoeTV

The Seattle Thunderbirds announced on Thursday that JoeTV will be broadcasting a further eight games in the 2020-21 WHL regular season. This is in addition to the four games already broadcast in March. The following games will be live on JoeTV, all start times are 5 pm local time:

Appelt commits to Grant MacEwen University

2000-born forward Riley Appelt (161GP, 15G, 13A) has committed to the Grant MacEwen University Griffins hockey team for the 2021-22 season. He has not played this season after being put on WHL waivers back on July 31, 2020. Appelt was a fourth-round pick of the Blazers in the 2015 WHL Draft.

Twarynski assigned to Flyers taxi squad

Forward Carsen Twarynski (257GP, 88G, 94A with Calgary and Kelowna ’14-’18) has been assigned to the Philadelphia Flyers taxi squad from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Twarynski has played just four games this season, all of them with the Flyers and he has yet to hit the scoresheet. Twarynski was selected in the third round of the 2016 NHL Draft by the Flyers.

Kakkonen signed to extension through 2023

Defenseman Valtteri Kakkonen (52GP, 1G, 9A with Kootenay ’18-’19) has signed a contract extension with JYP of Liiga, through the spring of 2023. This season with JYP Kakkonen scored three goals and added six assists through 49 games. He was selected 11th overall by the Kootenay ICE at the 2018 CHL Import Draft.
