2021 Memorial Cup canceled

In a statement from the Canadian Hockey League on Tuesday, the league has canceled the annual tournament to crown a CHL Champion. The Memorial Cup will not be awarded for the second straight season. An announcement regarding the timing and location of the 2022 Memorial Cup will be made at a later date.

Rockets cleared for team activities

Following their positive COVID-19 test results and subsequent suspension of team activities on March 30, the Kelowna Rockets have been cleared to resume team activities on Wednesday, April 14. This follows the league-mandated 14 day isolation period.

The Rockets are scheduled to return to game play on Saturday, April 17 at 7 PM local time.  They will face the Prince George Cougars at the Sandman Centre in Kamloops, BC.

Sogaard signs entry-level contract with Senators

Goaltender Mads Sogaard (74GP, 40-21-6, 2.58GAA, .915sv%) has signed an entry-level contract with the Ottawa Senators. Sogaard was one of 11 players that remained unsigned from the 2019 NHL Draft, despite being a second-round pick. The Esbjerg Energy of Denmark were the recipients of Sogaard being loaned out this season. He played 16 games with the team and had a .922 save percentage.

Kisio hits 200 win mark

Lethbridge Hurricanes Head Coach Brent Kisio reached 200 career wins on Monday night as the Hurricanes defeated the Red Deer Rebels 8-5. All 200 wins have come behind the bench in Lethbridge.

WHL announces schedule changes

The Western Hockey League announced the updated schedule for the week of April 15-19. All games listed below will be held at 7 PM.

  • Thursday, April 15 – Edmonton at Lethbridge
  • Friday, April 16 – Red Deer at Medicine Hat
  • Saturday, April 17 – Lethbridge at Edmonton
  • Saturday, April 17 – Medicine Hat at Red Deer
  • Sunday, April 18 – Edmonton at Lethbridge
  • Monday, April 19 – Red Deer at Medicine Hat

Myatovic scores first WHL goal

Seattle Thunderbirds 2004-born forward Nico Myatovic scored his first WHL goal at 2:25 of the first period in the Thunderbirds 4-2 win over the Tri-City Americans. Myatovic was a sixth-round 2019 WHL Draft pick of the Thunderbirds. He was playing in his first game. He also scored his second goal of the game at 4:56 of the second period.

Fricker scores first WHL goal

Spokane Chiefs 2003-born forward Copeland Fricker scored his first WHL goal in a 4-3 win over the Everett Silvertips. Fricker’s goal came at 4:41 of the second period, on the power play, to make the score 3-2 Silvertips. The Chiefs selected Fricker in the ninth round of the 2018 WHL Draft, and he was playing in his 11th game.

Linklater scores first WHL goal

Prince Albert Raiders 2003-born forward Logan Linklater scored his first WHL goal at 10:02 of the second period in a 4-2 Raiders win over the Regina Pats. Linklater’s goal made the score 4-0. The Raiders selected Linklater in the sixth round of the 2018 WHL Draft. He was playing in his 15th WHL game.

Roest scores first WHL goal

Everett Silvertips 2004-born forward Austin Roest scored his first WHL goal at 1:05 of the second period in last night’s 4-3 loss to the Spokane Chiefs. The goal gave the Silvertips a 3-1 lead. The undrafted Roest scored in his 12th WHL game.

Prowse commits to McGill University

Current Lethbridge Hurricanes defenseman Mitchell Prowse (251GP, 9G, 76A with Victoria and Lethbridge) has committed to play for the McGill University Redbirds for the 2021-22 season. Prowse has played 12 WHL games this season and has contributed four assists. The Victoria Royals drafted Prowse in the second round of the 2015 WHL Draft.

Schneider hits 200 career WHL games

Defenseman Braden Schneider has reached the 200 games played in the WHL milestone as the Brandon Wheat Kings met the Moose Jaw Warriors. Schneider, a first-round 2020 NHL Draft pick of the New York Rangers, has scored 19 goals and added 86 assists over his four seasons with the Wheat Kings.

Hofer earns first professional win

Goaltender Joel Hofer (115GP, 57-40-10, 3.04GAA, .905sv% with Swift Current and Portland ’17-’20) has earned his first professional win in the Utica Comets 5-1 win over the Syracuse Crunch. Hofer has played in three AHL games so far in his career after being selected in the fourth round of the 2018 NHL Draft by the St. Louis Blues.

Three former WHLers involved in ECHL trade

Indy Fuel defenseman Darian Skeoch (145GP, 4G, 19A with Lethbridge and Vancouver ’15-’18) is headed to the Allen Americans in exchange for defenseman Kayle Doetzel (292GP, 5G, 49A with Red Deer ’11-’16) and forward Conner Bleackley (259GP, 80G, 103A with Red Deer ’11-’16).

Skeoch played 13 games with the Indy Fuel this season and had yet to hit the score sheet. Skeoch played two seasons at Carleton University before making the jump to the ECHL.

Doetzel played 28 games as a member of the Allen Americans this season, scoring once and adding six assists. In five professional seasons, Doetzel has 194 games of ECHL experience and 68 games at the AHL level.

As a member of the Americans this season, Bleackley has played in 32 games scoring four goals and adding five assists. In five professional seasons, Bleackley has 119 games of ECHL experience and 133 games at the AHL level.

Papirny removed from Everblades roster

Goaltender Jordan Papirny (205GP, 119-60-22, 2.93GAA, .907sv%) was removed from the Florida Everblades roster and suspended by the team. In many cases in the ECHL, this is done to retain the rights of players for the future season. Papirny played in just one game for the Everblades this season, a game in which his team won 3-2 over the Orlando Solar Bears on April 2nd. Papirny made 38 saves.
