Lethbridge Hurricanes set to open camp scrimmages

The ice is in, and the sponsors’ logos look sharp on the fresh sheet. The start of the hockey season soon begins.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes are set to welcome rookie hopefuls into camp, starting Wednesday morning. Rosters have yet to be announced, but the schedule is all set.

Rookie camp kicks off at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 28th, with a goalie session at the Enmax Center. That will be followed by mini-tournament scrimmages for the rookies. The scrimmages begin at high noon, as the players are split into four squads.

Each team will play each other, with four games on the schedule for Wednesday and one game for each side on Thursday, August 29th. After the first set of games on Thursday, there will be a bronze and a gold medal game. The gold medal showdown is slated for 2:15 p.m.

Following the games Thursday, there could be some cuts before the main camp kicks off on Friday, August 30th, in the morning. At the main camp, the team will have three squads that will go through camp competing against each other in another tournament.

Squads A, B, and C will face off numerous times throughout Friday and Saturday, before the players are assigned to Team Red or Team White. Those two teams will each have a Saturday afternoon practice in preparation for the big intrasquad game on Sunday.

The intrasquad game is the pinnacle of the training camp. Team Red and Team White will square off at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 1st, at the Enmax Center. This annual game is a highlight for the city and signals the real beginning of the hockey season. The team, on their website, encourages fans to come on down as entry is free, but they did ask everyone to bring some non-perishable food for the food bank.

The Hurricanes will kick off the preseason vs. the Rebels in Red Deer on September 6th at 7 p.m.
