Hurricanes double up visiting Ice

Lethbridge Hurricanes got two snipes from their captain, Jordy Bellerive and kept top prospect Peyton Krebs off the scoresheet in a 6-3 win over the Kootenay Ice. Fellow top prospect Dylan Cozens added two assists in the victory at the Enmax Centre in Lethbridge.

Kootenay got off to a fast start just 4:26 into the game with a beautiful powerplay goal. Cameron Hausinger tipped home a Brett Davis shot as the visitors jumped out front 1-0.

Not long after ‘Canes goalie Reece Klassen came up big with a key save that helped to propel his squad.

It did work, as Jordy Bellerive finished a play off the post and in to tie the game at one. Dylan Cozen’s drop pass was picture perfect in finding the captian. Rookie import Danilka Palivko would record the other assist.

Ice Rookie netminder Jesse Makaj would rob Jackson Shepard of a sure goal from the slot not long after the tying goal as the Hurricanes poured on the pressure.

The pressure wouldn’t let up and eventually paid off. With just 49.5 second to go in the period when Jadon Joesph banged in a juicy rebound to give the home team a 2-1 lead at the first intermission break. Assists on the play would go to Jake Elmer and Koltraine Wilson. Canes would lead the shot totals as well 17-10.

A lacklustre second period would finally see some emotion when Jake Elmer took matters into his own hands. Stripping the puck away from an Ice player, breaking in and sniping an absolute beauty top shelf and finding the water bottle. The goal was Elmers eighth of the season and left the crowd in awe.

With the crowd still jacked up, Jordy Bellerive would pop home his second of the game. Bellerive would finish off a terrific passing play from defence partners Calen Addison and Nolan Jones. It would be Jones’ first point on the season. That goal would give the Hurricanes a three goal lead at 4-1 with just 20 mins to play. The shot clock would continue to favour the boys in red 36-20.

Over the final 20 minutes, the teams would trade chances back and forth all period.

It started with former Hurricane Jaegar White scoring from former Hurricanes Brett Davis. On Whites fourth of the season, the Ice would make it a two-goal game and give the team some short lived life. Short-lived cause just over two minutes later, overager Taylor Ross would answer for Lethbridge to restore the three goal lead. Ross’ seventh goal would be assisted by Calen Addison and Dylan Cozens.

Not wanting to miss out on the fun just moment after Ross gave the Canes the 5-2 lead Humbolt native Logan Barlage would all but put this one away scoring an unassisted goal, his fifth of the campaign. At 6-2 this game was in full control and the Hurricanes would steer it home. The Ice did get a late one back, Dallas Hines on the power play would score his first of the year from Brad Ginnell and Connor McClennon. The final score was 6-3.

Game notes: a small weekday crowd of just 2863 took this game in. With no points for Krebs it ended a 7- game point streak for the Ice superstar. Canes will now travel Friday to rival Medicine Hat for a home and home weekend set. Cameron Hausinger was the best Ice faceoff man going 7-for-11 while Zach Cox was 7-for-10 for the Hurricanes. Calen Addison led all players with 7 shots on goal.
