GM Sutter adds 2019 draft pick for Bains

It was announced this evening that the Red Deer Rebels had made a deal with the Everett Silvertips.

General Manager and Head Coach Brent Sutter sent 2014 ninth-round WHL Bantam Draft pick Akash Bains to the Silvertips for a 2019 sixth-round draft pick.

Bains has appeared in 86 WHL games, all with the Rebels. In that time he has posted eight goals and 17 assists. While officially listed as a left wing, he has played 58.82 per cent of this season’s games as a centre, winning 23 of 56 faceoffs (41.1 per cent).

Red Deer has now compiled two first-round picks, one second-round pick, one fourth-round pick, one sixth-round pick, two seventh-round picks and one pick in each of the eighth, ninth, 10th, 11th and 12th rounds. They have sent the third-round pick to the Regina Pats in the Lane Zablocki and Josh Mahura et al. deal. Their original sixth-round pick is now with Seattle in the Austin Strand and Brandon Schuldhaus trade.

This is the third player from the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft that Sutter has traded, including Jake Leschyshyn (Regina) and Dawson Weatherill (Spokane).

It was also announced that Assistant Coach Brett Anderson mutually agreed with the Rebels to leave the team due to personal reasons. Anderson was hired June 26 last summer. He had been coaching the Ontario Hockey Academy previous to his position with the Rebels.
