Daily Dose of the Dub: More trades as Rebels acquire Davis and Hausinger and ICE brings in Cowell

Rebels add two 1999-born forwards

-The day after the Lethbridge Hurricanes made a big trade bringing a talented duo of forwards, the Red Deer Rebels followed suit.

Red Deer traded the Kootenay ICE: 17-year-old forward River Fahey, 18-year-old forward Austin Schellenberg, 15-year-old unsigned prospect Chase Bertholet and 17-year-old signed prospect Justin Svenson. They also sent a first round, third round and sixth round pick in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft, second round pick in 2020 and a conditional third round pick in 2022 (likely contingent upon Davis and/or Hausinger returning to the WHL for the 2019-20 season)

Svenson played 18 games with the Rebels last year and one game this season and has yet to register a point. He was a third round pick by the Rebels in 2017.

Cameron Hausinger (Andy Devlin)

Fahey has one goal and three assists for four points in 47 games over two seasons with the Rebels and Schellenberg played part of two seasons prior to this one with Red Deer and 19 more games since. He has three goals and six assists for nine points in 67 total games.

Bertholet was taken in the fifth round of the 2018 draft by the Rebels.

In exchange for those three signed players and the rights to another, Red Deer gets two proven 19-year-old forwards in Brett Davis and Cameron Hausinger.

Davis, an unsigned sixth round pick by the Dallas Stars in the 2017 NHL Draft, was third on the ICE in scoring last season with 58 points. This season he has seven goals and 12 assists for 19 points in 24 games. He is the ICE’s second leading scorer.

Hausinger, who is currently out week-to-week with a lower body injury, has 17 points in 27 games. The right wing started his WHL career with the Saskatoon Blades, but actually played 41 games for the Rebels back in 2016-17, before being moved to the ICE for a fourth round pick on June 29th, 2017.

Hausinger, who had just 26 points over 119 games covering three seasons between Saskatoon and Red Deer, had a career year last season in Cranbrook. He had 21 goals and 22 assists for 43 points in 70 games with Kootenay in 2017-18.

He now returns to play for Red Deer.

Kootenay adds Cowell

-The ICE made another move on Friday as well, sending a third round pick in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft for Kelowna Rockets forward Jack Cowell.

The six-foot-two forward has five points this season with Kelowna, but had 34 a season ago in 71 games. Cowell was listed by Kelowna in 2016 and had played 156 total games with them over three seasons.

Cowell is from Winnipeg, Manitoba.

With Cowell and the forwards they got from Red Deer not being able to get to Kent, prior to the ICE’s game with the Seattle Thunderbirds, they started six rookie forwards.

Three stars of the night:

  1. Zack Andrusiak(Seattle) – Another hat-trick to go with an assist for the overage sniper. He now has two straight three-goal nights and has goals in seven straight with 11 markers in that span. His big night helped the Thunderbirds pull away from the visiting Kootenay ICE 7-4.
  2. Brandon Hagel (Red Deer) – Two goals and an assist for three points as he eld his Rebels to a 6-2 rout over the Calgary Hitmen.
  3. Leif Mattson (Kelowna) – A goal in regulation and the overtime winner as he led his Rockets to a 3-2 victory in Kennewick over Tri-City.

Honorable mentions:

Linden McCorrister (Brandon) had a goal and an assist for two points and the Wheat Kings took down the Regina Pats 5-1… Tristin Langan assisted on two Moose Jaw Warriors goals and his squad got a solid road win 3-1 over the Edmonton Oil Kings… Justin Hall had a goal and an assist for Lethbridge and they slipped past the Swift Current 3-1… It was the debut of Nick Henry and Jake Leschyshyn with the ‘Canes… Connor Dewar had an assist and the overtime winner as the Everett Silvertips came back and clipped the Spokane Chiefs 5-4… Quinn Schmiemann netted the overtime winner for the Kamloops Blazers as they slipped by the Saskatoon Blades 3-2.
