Daily Dose of the Dub: Hagel nets four goals; Dewar could face ire of the league

Three stars of the night:

  1. Brandon Hagel – Four-goal night for the overage forward from the Red Deer Rebels. The Rebels made the Edmonton Oil Kings return home a forgettable one as they took them down 5-2. Hagel had the last four goals for the Rebels and now has eight this year.
  2. Stelio Mattheos – Hat trick for Mattheos and the Brandon Wheat Kings beat the visiting Everett Silvertips 5-2.
  3. Lassi Thomson – It was a breakout night for both the first-year import and the Kelowna Rockets as they blew past the Victoria Royals 8-2. Thomson had two goals and two assists for four points.

Honorable mentions:

Kirby Dach was in on all three Saskatoon Blades goals and netted the overtime winner as they edged the visiting Spokane Chiefs 3-2… Linus Nassen had a goal and two assists for three points as the Medicine Hat Tigers came from behind to win in overtime over the Lethbridge Hurricanes 4-3… Luc Smith had two goals and an assist for three points for the Kamloops Blazers as they took out the visiting Swift Current Broncos 5-3… Jake Gricius had two more goals for the Portland Winterhawks as they stormed back and edged the visiting Vancouver Giants 5-3… Nolan Yaremko had three assists as the Tri-City Americans got some revenge on the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-2. Ethan Anders stopped 43-of-45 shots for the Rebels.

Troubling moments:

-From Tuesday night – the WHL suspended Tri-City’s Riley Bruce under supplemental discipline for his hit on Seattle forward Dillon Hamaliuk.

Max Martin received a three-game suspension under supplemental discipline for this hit on Calgary’s Jake Kryski.

-From Tuesday, a pair of Swift Current Broncos were suspended. Froward Alec Zawatsky was given one game for a high cross-check on Vancouver’s Bowen Byram. Also, defenseman Matthew Stanley was given two games for a one-man fight on Vancouver’s Milos Roman.

-From Wednesday, Saskatoon Blades forward Brady Nicholas was given a two-game suspension for a five-minute kneeing major and a game misconduct.

-Finally from Friday night. Everett Silvertips forward Connor Dewar bloodied both Zack Wytinck and Braden Schneider in one short sequence.

Tootoo honored by Brandon

-Before their game against Everett, the Brandon Wheat Kings had a press conference for their former star, Jordin Tootoo. The one-time Wheat King played 723 NHL games and had 161 points and 1,010 penalty minutes.

McIsaac off the Thunderbirds roster

-Seattle acquired the Kooteney ICE defenseman in late August for a ninth-round WHL Bantam Draft pick in 2019.

The right-handed 2000-born blue liner played in four games for Seattle and was a plus-one.

Fawkes lands with Rensselaer

-In other Seattle-Kootenay trade news, the player that was part of another trade for a Kootenay d-man, Eric Fawkes has officially committed to RPI. The 2016, second-round WHL Bantam, Draft pick is currently playing in the MJHL with the Winkler Flyers.
