Daily Dose of the Dub: Berlin and Sanders reassigned, Cougars sign Kohner

Kootenay reassigns their 1998-born goalie

The Kootenay ICE got down to four 20-year-olds Tuesday by reassigning goalie Matt Berlin. The 1998-born netminder was brought to Cranbrook in a trade with the Seattle Thunderbirds last season for a fifth round pick in the 2018 Bantam Draft. Berlin played 13 games with the ICE.

He posted a 3-8-0-1 record and had a 3.62 GAA and 0.875 save percentage.

The ICE had five overage players in the preseason with recently acquired forwards Jaeger White and Gunnar Wegleitner and defensemen Martin Bodak and Dallas Hines.

Berlin was one of three goalies the ICE had in the preseason and he had a stellar two games, posting a 2.49 GAA and 0.911 save percentage, winning both games.

However, the ICE must have felt they were set with the younger duo of 2000-born Duncan McGovern and 2001-born Jesse Makaj and did not want Berlin for one of their three overage spots.

Berlin has played in 57 regular season games over four seasons in the WHL for Spokane, Seattle and the ICE. He has stopped 950 of 1,071 shots for a 3.40 GAA and 0.887 save percentage.

Berlin’s next destination is unknown though he has spent time in the AJHL most recently with the Sherwood Park Crusaders.

Kootenay is down to 29 players with 17 forwards, 10 defensemen and two goalies. They also recently reassigned 2002-born forward James Form and 2002-born defenseman Anson McMaster.

Calgary moves away from Sanders; now down to three goalies

Like their Central Division rivals, the Calgary Hitmen reassigned a 20-year-old goalie. Overage netminder Nick Sanders was one of four goalies sticking around for awhile with the Hitmen but ultimately was a victim of the numbers for their 20-year-old spots.

Sanders was originally a sixth round pick by the Tri-City Americans in 2013 and played 29 games over three seasons with them. He was then moved to the Prince Albert Raiders during the 2016-17 season along with a third round pick for then overage goalie Rylan Parenteau.

Sanders played 34 games in 2016-17 with the Raiders before needing off-season hip surgery. He brok camp with the Raiders and played in four games before he was sent down to the AJHL’s Lloydminster Bobcats. While with the Bobcats, the Hitmen traded a sixth round 2019 pick for his rights.

Sanders never played a regular season game with Calgary as he got hurt while with Lloydminster.

This preseason the Calgary native got into two games and went 1-0 with a 2.92 GAA and 0.885 save percentage.

It is likely Sanders will return to Lloydminster.

Calgary now has 26 players in camp with 14 forwards, nine defensemen and three goalies.

Calgary also recently reassigned 2003-born, top 2018 Bantam pick Sean Tschigerl.
