Central Division Recap

Calgary Hitmen

Last Week – 1-2-0-0. A 3 game road trip started with losses of 4-3 and 6-1 in Moose Jaw and Brandon. Then in a possible preview of a 1st round playoff match-up the Hitmen won 6-3 in Regina.

Jake Kryski had 3 goals and Beck Malenstyn had 1 goal and 3 assists. Goalie Kyle Dumba appeared in all 3 games and Cody Porter was the back-up for a couple games after being on the injured list for 2 months.

This Week – It’ll be 4 games in 5 nights starting Wednesday against Saskatoon. The weekend will start with a home-and-home with Lethbridge and then they will host Edmonton.

Playoff Position – The Hitmen have the 2nd Wild Card spot, 1 point ahead of the Blades. Both teams have 7 games left in the season and 1 head-to-head meeting Wednesday in Calgary. The Hitmen are 3 points behind the 3rd place Rebels, both teams have 7 games remaining and have 1 head-to-head meeting in Red Deer in the final week of the season.

Edmonton Oil Kings

Last Week – 0-2-0-0. Oil Kings lost 5-2 to Kootenay and 4-3 to Swift Current. They now have 45 losses this season, 40 in regulation time.

Rookies Davis Murray and Trey Fix-Wolansky each had 1 goal and 1 assist.

This Week – Will play 4 games in 5 nights starting Wednesday in Lethbridge. On the weekend they will visit Medicine Hat then return home to host Medicine Hat and then back on the road to Calgary.

Playoff Position – After making the post season 6 years in a row the Oil Kings have officially been eliminated from making the playoffs this year.

Kootenay ICE

Last Week – 1-3-0-0. It was an encouraging start to the week as the ICE won 5-2 in Edmonton. It was a weekend to forget with 4-0, 8-0 and 11-2 losses in Saskatoon, Prince Albert and Moose Jaw.

The team scored a combined 7 goals in the 4 games and Vince Loschiavo and Colton Kroeker each had 1 goal and 3 assists.

This Week – Will play their 5th straight road game in Medicine Hat and then it’s a home-and-home against Red Deer on the weekend.

Playoff Position – Last overall in the WHL and are 5 points behind Prince Albert in the race to have the most ping pong balls in the Bantam Lottery.

Lethbridge Hurricanes

Last Week – 4-0-0-0. The winning streak is now at 6 games and it started with a 4-1 win in Regina. Then it took a couple of overtime wins of 3-2 in Brandon and 5-4 in Saskatoon. Those wins sandwiched a 5-2 victory in Prince Albert. Since January 6th they have a record of 22-2-1-1.

Tyler Wong led the entire WHL with 11 points (3 goals 8 assists), Brennan Mennell had an overtime goal to go with 8 assists and Giorgio Estephan and Matt Alfaro each scored 3 times. Goalies Stuart Skinner (3 games 2.31 .937%) and Ryan Gilchrest (1 game 2.00 .950%) were solid between the pipes.

This Week – Will host Edmonton and then have a home-and-home with Calgary.

Playoff Position – 2nd place in the division, 2 points behind the Tigers. They play each other the final 2 games of the regular season.

Medicine Hat Tigers

Last Week – 2-1-0-0. A 3 game road trip started with a 6-5 overtime win in Prince Albert. On the weekend they came from behind to win 6-4 in Regina and then lost 5-3 in Moose Jaw.

Goalie Michael Bullion has started 4 games in a row and 8 of the last 10. Steven Owre, Mark Rassell and John Dahlstrom each had 3-goal weeks.

This Week – Will host Kootenay on Tuesday and on the weekend it’s a home-and-home with the Oil Kings.

Playoff Position – 1st place in the division, 2 points ahead of Lethbridge. They play each other the final 2 games of the regular season.

Red Deer Rebels

Last Week – 0-0-1-0. Their lone game of the week was a 2-1 overtime loss to Swift Current.

Dawson Martin scored their only goal and goalie Riley Lamb made 41 saves.

This Week – The Rebels will host Saskatoon on Tuesday and it’s a home-and-home with Kootenay on the weekend.

Playoff Position – 3rd place in the division, 3 points ahead of the Hitmen. Also are 4 points ahead of the Blades for the 2nd wild Card spot.
