This day in Giants history – March 30

2005 – Rockets tie series in overtime

The one-goal games continued in this series into Game 4 and Kelowna was looking to even the series up.

Vancouver opened the scoring late into the opening period with a goal from Adam Courchaine for his third of the playoffs.

Despite having almost half the shots on goal as Kelowna, the Giants were able to hold that lead almost until the third period when Justin Keller tied things up in the dying seconds of the second period to tie things up at one going into the final period of regulation.

The third period would solve nothing, forcing overtime. Just 2:02 into the extra frame Lauris Darzins tied the series for Kelowna as the series shifted back up to the Okanagan for Game 5.

Marek Schwarz stopped 29-of-31 shots while Derek Yeomans had 16 saves.

2007 – Giants eliminate Bruins

Vancouver came into Game 5 looking to finish off a severe underdog Chilliwack Bruins team as the Giants were looking to continue their championship defence.

Tim Kraus opened the game’s scoring at 12:07 of the first period with his first goal of the series, but the lead wouldn’t last long. Just 1:08 later the Bruins evened things up with a shorthanded goal from Josh Aspenlind.

Kenndal McArdle would add the eventual game-winning goal to close out the opening period with 1:48 remaining.

Spencer Machacek added the insurance goal at 16:29 of the second period, which ended the game’s offence but there was a lot more action to follow as the game ended.

The game ended with a bit of bench clearer before cooler heads eventually prevailed.

2011 – Americans sweep Giants

Vancouver came into Game 4 with their season on the line in front of the home crowd.

Tri-City came to play from the opening face-off, opening the game’s scoring just 2:11 into play with a goal from Jordan Messier.

Several minutes later Vancouver got on the board with a goal from Brendan Gallagher with what would their only goal of the night before the Americans took over offensively for the remainder of the game.

The Americans scored four unanswered goals, with three in the first period, to sweep the Giants and advance on.

Tri-City would wind up being eliminated in the second round by Spokane in six games.

2012 – Chiefs win third straight

Since they won the opening two games of the series, the Giants were starting to let the series slip away from them in Game 5 with the winner looking to take a 3-2 series lead.

The game’s opening period saw just the one goal, coming from the Chiefs’ Liam Stewart. After Spokane went up two goals just 1:09 into the second, the Giants got themselves on the board with a power-play goal from Brendan Gallagher, his fifth of the series.

Vancouver kept things within a goal after 40 minutes, until the Chiefs took over in the final frame.

Spokane scored three unanswered goals, two from Mitch Holmberg, in the final 20 minutes to win their third straight game and take a 3-2 series lead.

Adam Morrison had 19 saves for the Giants and Eric Williams stopped 23-of-24 shots.

2019 – Giants move onto next round

The Western Conference-leading Giants went down to Kent, Washington looking for the franchise’s first series win in nine years.

After Bowen Byram scored his third of the playoffs in the first period, the Giants exploded for three goals in the middle frame, including a shorthanded goal from Jared Dmytriw and two goals from Jadon Joseph, to give themselves a more than comfortable 4-0 lead heading into the final period of play.

Tristen Nielsen extended the lead to five goals just 2:40 into the period, his second of the series.

Andrej Kukuca broke the shutout for Seattle at 15:32 of the third period to cap off the game’s scoring, giving the Giants the 5-1 victory and a 4-2 series win.

David Tendeck stopped 33-of-34 shots and Roddy Ross had 28 saves for the Thunderbirds.
