Ferguson’s return sparks a Blaze

Dylan Ferguson spent 18 days with the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights, where he backed up Maxime Legace for eight games. Ferguson would see 9:14 seconds of action on Tuesday in relief in a 8-2 loss in Edmonton against the Oilers. He would make one save on two shots, allowing a power play goal. The Golden Knights activated Malcolm Subban from Injured Reserve on Friday, allowing Ferguson to return to the Kamloops Blazers (8-13) and the WHL, in time to face the Vancouver Giants (9-9-2-2).

The Blazers were coming off a loss at home to the Cougars where their comeback from a 3-0 deficit would just fall short. Meanwhile the Giants came into Kamloops having won three straight, with points in four, including knocking off the BC Division leading Victoria Royals 4-1 on Saturday.

Ferguson’s return to WHL ice came with a minor hiccup, tripping and falling as the team entered the ice. Dylan would joke post game that he did it on purpose to make sure everyone knew he was back.

Early in the first period Brad Morrison would take a questionable slashing penalty on Nick Chyzowski as he tried to break out of the defensive zone. The ensuing power play would see Brodi Stuart open the scoring by banging home a loose puck just 1:25 into the game. The Blazers would take a too-many-men penalty less than two minutes later, with the Giants unable to capitalize. Jermaine Lowen would be sent to the box on another questionable call for goaltender interference shortly after.

On a rush up the ice Milos Roman would drop a pass to Ty Ronning wide open in the slot, and he would beat Ferguson stick-side to tie the game at one. Brad Morrison would again head to the penalty box with 6:16 left in the first period-this time for hooking. Cyle McNabb would serve the penalty as Morrison would also receive a 10 minute misconduct for a mouthguard violation. Kamloops would once again strike on the power play, the puck popping loose to Luc Smith beside the net who would find the twine. Joe Gatenby with the second assist on the Smith goal would notch his 100th WHL point. Late in the first period Brendan Semchuk would make a very late high cross check on Luke Zazula behind the Blazers net. The 5-foot-8 Zazula would waste no time jumping up from the ice, dropping his gloves, and taking on the much larger 6-foot Semchuk. Along with the fighting majors, Semchuk would receive a minor for high sticking while Zazula would be tagged with the instigator and a 10 minute misconduct, much to the displeasure of the home crowd.

Thirty seconds into the second period, Loewen would take his second goaltender interference penalty as he drove hard to the net crashing into a sprawling Todd Scott. On the power play Ferguson would make his biggest stop of the night, sliding to his right and making a pad save on Ronning off a beautiful cross crease pass from Tyler Benson, keeping the Blazer lead at one.

Kamloops would head to its third power-play with nine minutes left in the middle frame. Loewen would tip in a point shot from Ondrej Vala to increase the lead to 3-1, and continue his run as one of the hottest Blazers’ scorers recently. He has now scored in six straight games. Less than two minutes later the Blazers would find themselves on their fourth man advantage. Quinn Benjafield would score, making the Blazers four-for-four on the power play to that point. With the announcement of Benjafield’s goal not even complete, Kamloops would rush up ice and Jackson Shepard would feed a wide open Vala who would score just 21 seconds later. Heavyweight Darian Skeoch would attempt to spark the Giants just over a minute later with a fight against Scott Mahovlich. Skeoch getting the better of Mahovlich. Unfortunately it would not result in much of a spark for the Giants.

Ty Ronning would give the Giants a glimmer of hope just over 5 minutes into the third period off a neutral zone turn over, scoring his second of the night, unassisted. Four minutes later Tyler Benson would take a roughing penalty and the Blazers would once again score on a cross ice pass from Benjafield to Gatenby. That gave Kamloops their fifth power play goal of the game, tying a league record this season, and ending any doubt to the game. The final score Kamloops 6 – Vancouver 2.
