Daily Dose of the Dub: Cowell trade nullified; Seattle’s Tsyzka makes season debut; Former ‘Tip gets first pro shutout

Cowell Gone Home

A trade between the Kootenay Ice and the Kelowna Rockets has been rescinded. One week ago to the day, the Rockets traded F Jack Cowell to the Ice for a 2020 third round pick in the WHL Bantam Draft. Instead of reporting, Cowell decided to go back home to Winnipeg, voiding the deal and returning Kootenay’s third rounder. In 26 games this season, Cowell put up two goals and three assists. He has skated in 182 career WHL games, he has 18 goals and 38 assists.

Tsyzka Returns 

Seattle defenseman Jarret Tsyzka made his season debut in a 4-1 win over Tri-City Friday night. The 2017 Montreal Canadiens fifth rounder had been sidelined since September after suffering what appeared to be a neck injury as a result of a hit from behind during a Montreal rookie tournament game. He had to be escorted off the ice on a stretcher. The native of Langley, BC has played in 173 career games collecting 17 goals and 54 assists.

Hart shuts the door

Two-time CHL Goaltender of the Year and three-time WHL Top Goaltender Carter Hart stopped 26 shots to earn the first shutout of his young pro career. The former Everett Silvertip is 6-2-0 with a 2.68 GAA and .911 SV% in his last 9 games after a rocky start to the season. In 190 career WHL games, he had a 116-46-19 record to go with a 2.01 GAA, .927 SV% and 26 shutouts. Hart was drafted by Philadelphia in the second round, 48th overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

1st Star: Eli Zummack of the Spokane Chiefs recorded four assists in a 6-2 win over Lethbridge. His first four point game of his WHL career.

2nd Star: Tristin Langan of the Moose Jaw Warriors finished the night with a goal and two assists in a 3-2 victory over Saskatoon.

3rd Star: Jake Gricius of the Portland Winterhawks had three assists in Portland’s 5-2 win over Prince George

WHL leading scorer Brett Leason extended his point streak to 29 games with an assist on Sean Montgomery’s second period goal…..Broncos goalie Isaac Poulter put up 42 saves on 45 shots in a losing effort vs Calgary…..Rebels’ Chris Douglas extended his point streak to four games with an assist, he has six points in that span…..Kelowna’s Kyle Topping is also riding a four-game point streak with an assist in a 2-0 win over Victoria…..T-Birds forward Matthew Wedman scored a goal and an assist to push Seattle past Tri-City 4-1. Portland’s Cody Glass scored the fourth ever 3-on-5 short handed goal in Winterhawks history.

Troubling Moments

Cole Reinhardt (Brandon) received a five minute major for Checking from Behind and a game misconduct at 16:47 of the third period Friday night.

Portland’s Joachim Blichfeld went into the Prince George bench and received a stick from Austin Crossley for his troubles. No call was made on Crossley.

No call was made on this play either as Alexander Alexeyev of Red Deer had to leave the game after taking a high hit from Regina’s Liam Schioler. Alexeyev would return.
