A successful first season for Drew Sim

Drew Sim had a successful first season with the Giants. He finished with a record of 5-2 while recording a shutout and an assist. Sim held the fort for the Giants when they needed him and really settled down as the season progressed. He only allowed four goals over his final three games and showed he can be the goaltender of the future for the Giants.

Improvements during the summer

One part of Sim’s game that really improved between last season and this one was his reaction and speed in the net. He was able to get across the crease faster and made it difficult on the shooters.

“I worked on my speed and explosiveness. Just being able to move laterally quicker and play the puck out better. I wanted to make sure I was ready to get out and make good tape-to-tape passes and not turn the puck over.

Favourite memory

It was a special year for Sim. He registered his first win, shutout, and assist all against the Royals. Although the win was special, the shutout was Sim’s favourite.

“Definitely had to go with the shutout. Just the way that game felt. I was in control and did not give up too many rebounds. I did not have much to worry about. The guys were really good blocking shots and keeping pucks out of high danger areas. That one was really special.

Stepping up against Victoria

Sim played in every game against the Royals this season. The Royals brought a really young team to the bubble so playing Sim against them was beneficial as he will see most of these players over the next few seasons.

“I learned what certain guys do in certain situations. The more you play them, the more you know what they want to do with the puck. Just having this year and getting in all the games against Victoria has been very good. I am starting to know what their lineup wants to do and how they want to play and how they try and attack.”

A special memory

The bond between Trent Miner and Sim really helped him grow this season. Miner was there for him whenever he needed to ensure Sim had a successful season.

“One memory that stands out is the goalie walks every morning. Goalies get up a little early and go for a walk outside in the park. We talked goalie stuff and had some fun. That was probably my most memorable one.

“Miner has been huge for me. I can go to him anytime I want and bounce ideas and strategies off him. Just seeing how he is on and off the ice. Watching him like a hawk. I am just trying to learn what it takes to be a pro. With him and his AHL stint before the year, I think he proved he is ready to make that jump and be a pro on and off the ice.”

Ready for next year

Sim played well this season despite his statistic. Yes, he had blips and moments throughout the season, but he really settled down as the season progressed to the point where the Giants should feel confident about his game. He controlled the net well, did not give up too many rebounds, and was able to stay sharp despite most of the action being down on the other side of the ice. It was a successful season for Sim and a glimpse into the steady goaltender he can become down the line.
