WHL at the World Junior Championships day two

Switzerland 3 Belarus 2

Belarus (0-2) looked on the verge of winning their first game at the WJCs since 2007, after taking a 2-1 lead in the third period after Viktor Bovbel notched a power play goal. Instead, Switzerland (1-0) stormed back and got goals from Valentin Nussbaumer and Phillipp Kurashev to take it 3-2.

Kamloops Blazers forward Justin Sigrist in the win for Switzerland, had two shots and was a plus-one in 17:03 of ice time.

Victoria Royals forward Igor Martynov had one shot and was a minus two in 17:40 for Belarus.

Prince George Cougars forward Vladislav Mikhalchuk was a minus one in only 3:33 of ice time.

Calgary Hitmen defenseman Vladislav Yeryomenko led Belarus in ice time with 26:54. He had two shots and was an even rating.

Canada 6 Slovakia 0

Canada (2-0) won another big Group A game, behind a goal and an assist from Regina Pats center Sam Steel. Steel opened the scoring with a marker 3:39 into the game. Kelowna Rockets forward Dillon Dube also found the score sheet with an assist on Canada’s second goal, which came in the middle frame. Steel would then assist on Canada’s fourth goal and it was 4-0 after the second. They would go on to win over Slovakia (0-1) 6-0 and walk away from their first two games at the tournament with two wins and 10 goals for and two against.

Steel now has two goals and an assist in the two games and had five shots in 14:55 of ice time. Dube led both teams with six shots on net. This occurred within 17:04 of ice time.

Kelowna Rockets defenseman Cal Foote skated 19:51 of ice time while Calgary Hitmen blue liner Jake Bean skated 15:03 and had five shots on net. The fact that Bean was able to return to the game was astounding as he got tangled up and took a rough fall head first into the boards. He did not seem any worse for wear.

Brandon Wheat Kings d-man Kale Clague was held out of the game after blocking a shot Tuesday with his foot.

Moose Jaw Warriors forward Brett Howden had four shots on net in 14:06. He was a plus-one.

Swift Current Broncos forward Tyler Steenbergen continues to skate as the team’s 13th forward and his ice time reflects that. He had just 9:33 of ice time but was able to be a plus-one and get two shots on net.

For Slovakia it was a rough night. Vancouver Giants import forward Milos Roman had one shot in 15:13 of ice time, while Kootenay ICE d-man and Slovakian team captain Martin Bodak had two shots in 20:01.
