WHL Shootout History

2016-17 marks the 12th season the WHL has used the shootout format.

As of February 20/17 there has been 868 shootouts in WHL history.

The first year there were 94 shootouts, the most in one season.

Before switching to 3-on-3 overtime last season the WHL averaged 78 shootouts a season.

Last year there 43 and this year they are on pace for 48.

The numbers show that 3-on-3 overtime has greatly reduced the number of shootouts.

WHL – Games that went to overtime.

14-15 – 48.1% decided in OT.

15-16 – 68.4% won in OT.

16-17 – 69.2% won in OT, 30.8% in shootout.

Shootout stats …

– Most SO wins in one season 06-07 Everett with 10

– Most SO losses in one season 06-07 Seattle with 11, they had zero SO wins

– Most SO games in one season 05-06 Prince Albert with 16, had a record of 6 wins 10 losses

As of February 2/17 here are the all-time shootout winning percentages in the WHL. Edmonton was not in the league the first 2 years of the shootout and Victoria/Chilliwack was not in the league the first year of the shootout.
