WHL recap: Tigers shutdown Oil Kings; Chiefs, Rockets and Raiders also victorious

Prince Albert 4 Kootenay 3

The Prince Albert Raiders (22-20-9-2) fell two points back of the Saskatoon Blades when the Blades took down the Kootenay ICE (23-28-3-0) 5-3 on Tuesday.

They made up those two points by dispatching the ICE themselves 4-3 on Wednesday evening.

It was not an easy time of things though as the ICE tied the game at three midway through the third period. The Raiders then got a big goal from Jordy Stallard to steal the two points and re-tie the Blades for the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

It may have helped the Raiders to take some frustrations out on the third seed in the Central Division ICE. Through no fault of their own, due the current playoff format, the ICE seem destined for the playoffs, despite currently having six points less than both the Blades and Raiders.

In fact with their recent wins over the ICE, the Raiders and Blades crawled to within a point of the second-seeded Central Division team, the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

Stallard started the scoring 5:39 in and Curtis Miske added a power play marker with 2:33 left in the frame to make the score 2-0.

Miske had three points in the game.

Cameron Hausinger halved that lead with a marker 13 seconds later and Sebastian Streu tied things up 13:45 into the second for the ICE.

Before 40 minutes was over though, Spencer Moe netted his seventh of the year to give the Raiders a 3-2 lead.

Baer tied the game 8:04 into the third, setting the table for Stallard’s second of the game and the game winner.

Ian Scott stopped 20 of 23 in the win and Duncan McGovern turned away 30 of 34 for the ICE.

The ICE now head to Regina, while the Raiders get ready for a big game in Swift Current Friday.

Medicine Hat 6 Edmonton 0

The last time overage goalie Michael Bullion had a shut out, the season was only two games old. The netminder stopped all 31 Edmonton Oil Kings (14-31-5-2) shots and led the Medicine Hat Tigers (27-22-7-0) to a 6-0 win.

The Tigers netted four goals in the first period and never looked back. Tyler Preziuso started the scoring 2:43 in. Then David Quenneville added his 22nd this year to double their lead. Ryan Chyzowski added his 17th of the year and Mark Rassell netted a short handed tally.

The score would remain the same until Gary Haden netted his 14th of the year 12:22 into the third. Josh Williams then put the game away with a marker with just three seconds left.

Josh Dechaine stopped 33 of 39 for Edmonton.

The Oil Kings will now head over to Red Deer for a game Friday. The Tigers will play host to the Calgary Hitmen.

Spokane 3 @Kamloops 1

The Kamloops Blazers (24-25-1-3) were well aware of number 17 out on the ice for the Spokane Chiefs (28-19-3-2). Kailer Yamamto came into their game Wednesday night on a tear. He had 11-game point streak going and nine points in his last two games.

The good news for the Blazers, is that they held Yamamoto off and snapped his point streak. The bad news was that the Chiefs stymied them offensively, to the tune of only 22 shots and they fell 3-1 to the visitors from Spokane.

After Brodi Stuart opened the scoring for the Blazers and Luke Toporowski tied the game, the Chiefs got a big short handed goal that ended up being the difference.

With Jaret Anderson-Dolan in the box for boarding late in the second period, Riley Woods took a pass and streaked by the Kamloops defense. He then drove to the right and slipped a backhand shot by goalie Dylan Ferguson.

Ethan McIndoe added an empty netter with 57 seconds left for the 3-1 final.

Dawson Weatherill turned away 21 of 22 for Spokane, while Ferguson stopped 29 of 31.

Spokane heads to Everett for a game Friday, while Kamloops heads to Prince George.

Kelowna 4 Vancouver 1

26 games. That is how many times in-a-row that the Kelowna Rockets (33-16-3-1) have taken down the Vancouver Giants (28-17-5-3) at Prospera Place.

This time it was all about a first period where the Rockets outshot the Giants 15-2 and got on the board first with a marker from Kole Lind.

That set the tone and created a deficit that the Giants would be battling back from all game.

Leif Mattson and Conner Bruggen-Cate then put together a short handed rush that Bruggen-Cate finished off and it was 2-0 6:09 into the second.

The Giants did not get on board until Davis Koch found the net with 47 seconds left in the middle frame.

Carsen Twarynski and Dillon Dube added third period goals to give the Rockets some cushion and the 4-1 win.

Brodan Salmond stopped 25 of 26 for Kelowna, while David Tendeck was good for 32 saves on 35 shots for the Giants.

The Rockets retook sole possession of first in the B.C. Division with the win, while the Giants remained four points back of the Victoria Royals with two games in hand.

The Rockets and Royals battle for first on Friday on Vancouver Island, while the Giants will host the Seattle Thunderbirds.
