WHL recap: January 13th

Moose Jaw @Prince Albert 

Just one night after guarantee win night, the Prince Albert Raiders took on the Moose Jaw Warriors at the Art Hauser Centre. It would be the Raiders who got the early jump in this one as Jordy Stallard would score  his 28th goal of the year.

Early in the second period the Warriors would tie the game up. Ryan Peckford would score his 13th of the season from Brett Howden and Josh Brook. The penalties began to pile up for both teams and they would exchange power play goals, first the Raiders at 13:41 of the middle frame on a goal from Curtis Miske. Then the Warriors would get back to evens with the Raiders, scoring their own power play marker at 15:38. Justin Almedia would score his 27th of the season. Less than a minute later the Radiers would take back the lead with Jordy Stallard’s second goal of the night. The Raiders would take a 3-2 lead into the second intermission.

Limiting the Warriors to just 22 shots on the night was key for the Raiders as they were able to score the eventual winner with 7:55 gone in the third period. Kody McDonald would pick up his second game winner since joining the Raiders just seven days ago. Jett Woo would make it interesting with 1:22 to go and Brody Willms pulled but that was as close as the Warriors would come, final score Prince Albert 4 Moose Jaw 3.

Calgary @Regina

A chippy affair would go the Pats way, despite having given up six power play opportunities to the Hitmen’s two. Just past the midway point of the first the goals would start coming for the Pats. Logan Nijhoff would start the Pats off with his third of the season. Recently added Jesse Gabrielle from the Prince George Cougars would score his first goal of the WHL season, Josh Mahura would collect an assist on this goal, his first of five points on the night (1G, 4A). The Pats weren’t done there, with just three seconds left in the period Jared Legien got his 17th of the year, on the power play and the eventual game winner.

With 9:06 gone in the second period the Pats would add to their lead. Mahura would get his 14th goal of the season, Jesse Gabrielle would collect his second point of the night. While short-handed, Sam Steel would collect a pass from Cale Fleury and head down the ice, putting the puck past Nick Schneider. With just less than two minutes to go in the second, the Hitmen get on the board to make it 5-1. Cael Zimmerman collected his fifth goal of the year.

The third period would be mostly Pats yet again. Jesse Gabrielle would score his second of the night, 1:12 in. A little more than four minutes later, Robbie Holmes would get in on the action with his 13th of the season. The Pats would lead 7-1. A late high sticking penalty to Nick Henry would give Calgary a chance to add to their single goal and they would convert. Riley Stotts was credited with his 10th goal of the season. Not to be out done, the Pats would score the games 10th goal. Matt Bradley would score his 27th of the year. The final Regina 8 Calgary 2.

Medicine Hat @Brandon

The Medicine Hat Tigers would overcome a two goal and a one goal deficit to take out the Wheat Kings in overtime. The Wheat Kings would go up two nothing before the end of the first period on goals from Stelio Mattheos (30) and Ty Lewis (25).

The Tigers would get a goal back early in the second period when Mark Rassell scored his 36th of the season. It would take the entire rest of the second and 2:51 into the third before the Tigers would claw their way to a tie. David Quenneville would score his 19th goal to knot the game at two.

Less than two minutes later the Wheat Kings would retake the lead on a goal from Connor Gutenberg. His goal would be the 14th of the season, but the lead would last just barely more than three minutes. Medicine Hat would be granted a four minute power play when Marcus Sekundiak would be sent off for slew-footing. Gary Haden’s 12th goal of the season would tie things up and send the game to overtime.

In overtime it would be the Tigers taking their only lead of the game and it was the game winner. Ryan Jevne would be the hero on this night as the Medicine Hat Tigers would take this one 4-3.

Kootenay @Lethbridge

The Lethbridge Hurricanes and the Kootenay Ice are battling it out for second and third place in the lowly Central Division. The battle on this night would take place at the Enmax Centre in Lethbridge and it would be the home side taking a victory to extend their lead over the Ice to six points for second in the division.

The teams would trade the first five goals of the night with Lethbridge scoring first. Newcomer Jeri Keltie-Leon would open the scoring with his first goal as a Hurricane in just his second game.

A little over five minutes later Cameron Hausinger would tie the game up at one with his 14th goal of the season. The Hurricanes would quickly take back their lead, scoring a goal less than two minutes later. It would be Dylan Cozens scoring his 14th goal of the season but he wouldn’t be done there.

Defenceman Sam Huston would tie the game up at two early in the second period, his first goal of the year. Again the Hurricanes didn’t wait long to tie the game back up. It would be Cozens again scoring to give the Hurricanes another lead. This one they wouldn’t relinquish, as Cozens would collect the hat trick goal to put his team up 4-2.

With an empty net the Hurricanes would seal the deal and win this one 5-2. Taylor Ross would score his 12th goal of the season.

 

Seattle @Portland

The Winterhawks would score themselves a goal in this one in less time than it took to roll up the anthem singers mat. Cody Glass scored his 24th of the season. Skylar McKenzie was hauled down on a short-handed breakaway and was given a penalty shot. He would make good on his second chance and put the Winterhawks up 2-0 before the game was seven minutes old. The first period would end with the Winterhawks up 2-0.

The second period would see McKenzie add to the Winterhawks lead at the 8:09 mark. Seattle’s starting netminder Liam Hughes would be pulled in favour of Dorrin Luding at this point. Then the Thunderbirds would come to life. Seattle scored just 32 seconds later. Dillon Hamaliuk netted his ninth goal of the season to make it 3-1 Winterhawks. A little over a minute later Donovan Neuls would collect his 14th goal on the year and bring the Thunderbirds within one goal.

With Turner Ottenbreit sitting in the penalty box, the Winterhawks would take advantage of the extra man situation. Joachim Blichfeld would take a pass from Glass and make it another two goal lead for the Winterhawks. Before the second period was over Ryan Hughes would score to make it 5-2 for Portland. Dennis Cholowski would pick up his first point as a member of the Winterhawks on the goal.

The Thunderbirds would try to make a game of it in the third period. Just 2:25 into the period Hamaliuk would score his second of the night and tighten the game up just a little bit. Shane Farkas would do his best work in the third despite allowing two goals, the second at 18:19 of the third period. Nolan Volcan would score his 18th goal of the season and make it just a one goal game. Luding was pulled for the extra attacker to no avail as the Portland Winterhawks would score a 5-4 victory on this night.

Everett @Spokane

Despite and early first period goal from Jake McGrew (10) it would be the Everett Silvertips prevailing over the Spokane Chiefs in this game. The Silvertips would get three goals in just over five minutes to close out the first period. Garrett Pilon would get his first and second goals as a Silvertips with a goal from Matt Fonteyne tucked in between. Fonteyne would score his 24th of the year on the power play, which the Silvertips would go 2-for-4 last night. In the third period, Hudson Elyniuk would score his 22nd of the season to give the Chiefs some hope but it would not be enough.

Everett would add an empty net goal with 1:54 and Pilon would complete the hat-trick. Final score Everett 5 Spokane 2.
