When the transaction of overage import Dominic Zwerger moving from the Spokane Chiefs to the Everett Silvertips for a single third round draft pick was announced, I could have sworn there was a mistake. Surely a proven goal scorer who could easily challenge for a top-line spot on any team would command more than one draft pick. There was no mistake, though, as Zwerger became a Silvertip for pennies on the dollar.
You can check out Zwerger’s stats below.

Trading for a two-spotter (overage and import) player is not always the easiest thing to do. The acquiring team needs room on their roster, but also needs to be prepared to make some tough decisions. To complete this transaction, the Silvertips had to release import Mario Mucka, a Slovakian forward they drafted this year in the second round of the CHL import draft.
I polled everyone here at Dubnetwork and this is who we think won this trade.

In the end, Spokane was able to turn what should have been an in-demand asset into a lottery ticket. Does this set the market for Portland’s Rodrigo Abols or does Mike Johnston know his asset is likely worth more than that? This also begs the question: Were there supposed to be some “future considerations” tacked on at the end of this trade?
