Swift Current Broncos active before trade deadline

The Swift Current Broncos did not sit on their hands before the trade deadline. They made a couple of good trades this week that will surely help their club.

Joel Sexsmith was sent to the Vancouver Giants in exchange for a first round Bantam Draft pick in 2019. This young, talented 15 year old is sure to hold his own on the blue line in Vancouver. At 6’1” and 165 lbs, Sexsmith has been playing in the CSSHL for the Edge School Prep and has not played in Swift Current since being drafted in May 2017. His good skating skills and aggressiveness on the blue line will prove that he will be an asset to any team he plays for.

Soon after, Swift Current acquired Josh Anderson, a 6’3” stay-at-home defensemen, from the Price George Cougars. In return, the Broncos gave up first round picks in the 2018 and 2019 Bantam Draft. Prices are steep this season, but the payoff in Anderson could very well be worth it. This veteran player came from the Bantam Tier 1 Cowichan Valley Capitals to the WHL Prince George Cougars in 2013 and spent the past four years with the club.

Swift Current did what they needed to do in finding a big body to protect the defensive zone. Considering their earlier trades that brought offensive players Beck Malenstyn and Matteo Gennaro to Swift Current, the Broncos could sit back without making any more moves this season. But the one thing I’ve learned over the years is that hockey is unpredictable and nothing ever really goes as planned. So now we wait.
